IFPI responds to European Commission's Digital Single Market strategy

9th December 2015

The European Commission has today set out its Digital Single Market strategy, which proposes "first steps to broaden access to online content and outlines its vision to modernise EU copyright rules". Full details of the Commission's strategy, published today, are here.

Today's announcement by the Commission on its plans for copyright is an opportunity to champion Europe's creative sectors and their digital growth. The music industry is already 35% digital in Europe, and consumers have access to 43 million songs and some 200 services. Portability has been a long-standing feature of digital music services, enabling consumers to access their content where, when and how they want.

Today's Communication usefully focuses on several areas that need to be addressed, including a review of the role of online platforms in relation to copyright. The Commission also recognises the need to properly enforce and protect IP rights in Europe in order to allow the digital market to grow.
