Kumar Taurani elected IMI chairman

New Delhi, 12th January 2009

Kumar Taurani, chairman and managing director of Tips, one of India's leading music and film companies, has been unanimously elected as chairman of the board of directors of the Indian Music Industry (IMI) and Phonographic Performance (PPL) for 2009-10.

Taurani said: "The prime challenge for content owners, music and films, remains piracy and we are finding ways and means to overcome this menace. We are focused in enhancing our partnership with telecom and broadcasting industries and bring about increased awareness for public performance licenses."

IMI is a non-profit organisation headquartered in Mumbai that is focused on promoting and encouraging development of music culture, facilitating the evolution of fair trade and business practices, ensuring a copyright compliance regime and garnering government support on matters of concern related to copyright in sound recordings. It is affiliated to IFPI, the body that represents the recording industry worldwide. PPL licenses and administers broadcasting, telecasting, public performance and mobile-digital rights on behalf of its 142 members and plays a key role in supporting the fair and proper monetization of music content usage by radio, television and other users.
