IFPI appoints Jo Oliver as General Counsel

London, 25th June 2008

Jo Oliver has been promoted to the position of General Counsel at IFPI, the organisation representing the recording industry worldwide. Reporting to Chairman and CEO John Kennedy, she takes responsibility for the organisation’s global litigation, regulatory compliance and corporate legal affairs.

Oliver, a copyright law specialist, joined IFPI from private practice in 2005 and has headed IFPI’s Litigation Department since October 2006. As well as overseeing IFPI's regular programme of anti-piracy litigation around the world, she has developed new strategies to address emerging threats in internet piracy. She has also been instrumental in IFPI’s campaign to engage ISPs in addressing piracy on their networks.

Oliver originally trained in New Zealand and holds a Masters Degree (LL.M) from Columbia Law School, New York. Prior to joining IFPI, she worked for law firms in London, New York, Australia and New Zealand.

IFPI Chairman and CEO John Kennedy said: “I am delighted that, having successfully directed our litigation and general legal activities over the last 18 months, Jo Oliver is now able to take on the position of IFPI’s General Counsel. Jo is an outstanding lawyer and strategist, as well as a natural team-leader who has already proved her worth to the international recording industry. She commands tremendous respect from both within the IFPI membership and outside it. Her knowledge, drive and experience made her the perfect candidate for this appointment.”
