EMI - Philippe Ascoli named Managing Director of Virgin France
Paris, 16 March 2007
Philippe Ascoli has been appointed managing director of Virgin Music France, rejoining the label at which he began his EMI career in 1992. He succeeds Laurent Chapeau, who has been promoted to vice president of international marketing for Continental Europe.
Ascoli remains president of Source etc, the joint venture label he established with EMI Music France in September 2005. In both roles, he reports to Jean-Francois Cecillon, president of EMI Music France and chairman and CEO of EMI Music International.
For the last two years, Ascoli has also been senior creative advisor to Cecillon across continental Europe and, as president of source etc, has signed promising new artists such as Rose, Herman Dune and Naast.
Ascoli has promoted Bertil David to head of Source etc, from his current position as the label's head of A&R. Artists signed by David include Camille and Henri Salvador.
Ascoli began his career in 1989 at Polydor France, where he signed MC Solaar. He became head of A&R for Virgin France in 1992 before founding Source France in 1995, where he signed artists including Air, Phoenix and Saian Supa Crew. In November 1998, he moved to London to launch Source UK, signing artists including Gemma Hayes, Turin Brakes and Kings Of Convenience. He became vice president of A&R for Virgin UK in October 2001, while continuing in his role as managing director for Source UK.
He was appointed managing director of Virgin UK in January 2002, and during his three year tenure, he and his team brought a new generation of artists such as Kelis, the Thrills, the Kooks and Jamie T to the label, as well as the Relentless joint venture.
Cecillon commented: "Philippe's track record as a label head and an A&R executive speak for themselves. The creativity and focus that he will bring to Virgin France will be important in ensuring the continued success of the repertoire stream."
Ascoli said: "I am so happy to be coming back to the label that has meant so much to me throughout my career, and to work with a talented group of artists and team. I want to thank JF for giving me this fantastic opportunity."For more information please contact:
