Unauthorised file-sharing
- Broadband penetration in French households is 13%.
- About 4.6 million people swap music on unauthorised file-sharing services on the internet in France at any one time.
- 36% of young people aged 15-19 engage in file-sharing.
- 29% of young people aged 20-29 engage in file-sharing.
Awareness
- 73% of unauthorised file-sharers know that uploading unauthorised music is illegal, compared to 59% in January 2004.
State of the local industry
- Between 2001 and 2003 music sales fell by 134 million euros - a 11% drop.
- Music buying has declined by 6% among 15-29 year olds, due to the availability of free music files on the web.
- 800 jobs have been lost in the past 2 years.
- 5,800 albums were release between January 2002 and December 2003.
- 27 % of turnover is invested in A&R in France. 2,700 new albums are released in France per year. This has decreased by 22%.
Legitimate Services
- Less than 500 thousand regular internet users in France download music legitimately.
- There are six major legitimate services in France : VirginMega.fr, OD2 France, e-compil.fr, fnac.com, iTunes Music Store, Sony Connect.
