Statement by Jay Berman, Chairman and CEO of IFPI, on Aim/Impala/Napster announcement

London, June 26, 2001

"This is further evidence that Napster is learning to live with the copyright community. It shows that the tireless efforts of record companies to convince Napster to develop its technology legitimately are bearing fruit. And it reinforces the message that IFPI and the international record industry have been sending out for months: the future of music on the internet lies not in infringing copyright, but in developing secure services that respect copyright. That is the way consumers are going to get the music they want in the myriad of new ways that the internet makes possible"

IFPI is the organisation representing the recording industry worldwide. Its membership comprises more than 1400 record companies in over 70 countries.
